Soto Named to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce for the 118th Congress

January 26, 2023

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Congressman Darren Soto (FL-09) announced that he has been named to serve on the House Energy and Commerce Committee in the 118th Congress.

“I am honored and thrilled to serve on the Energy and Commerce Committee during the 118th Congress,” said Rep. Soto. “Alongside my fellow House Democrats and Republican colleagues, I will focus on coming together to boost local tech jobs and manufacturing, combat climate change, curb inflation, expand access to healthcare, and much more. The people of Florida’s Ninth Congressional District depend on a lot of legislation coming out of our committee, so I am prepared to advocate for them and our community.”

The Committee on Energy and Commerce is the oldest standing legislative committee in the U.S. House of Representatives and is vested with the broadest jurisdiction of any congressional authorizing committee.

The committee was originally established on December 14, 1795, as the Committee on Commerce and Manufactures when the growing demands of the young nation required that Congress establish a permanent panel to exercise its constitutional authority to "regulate Commerce with foreign Nations, and among the several States." It is the longest-continuously serving committee in Congress.

Today, the committee has responsibility for matters including telecommunications, consumer protection, food and drug safety, public health and research, environmental quality, energy policy, and interstate and foreign commerce among others.
