Rep. Soto Urges for DHS to Delay DACA Deadline for Disaster Victims

September 21, 2017

On September 19, Congressman Darren Soto sent a letter to Acting Secretary Elaine Duke of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), requesting an extension to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) renewal application deadline which was set for October 5, 2017 by President Trump.

The October deadline has added more hardships for those young people who were in need to reapply and were affected by Harvey and Irma. Several government offices have been closed due to the hurricanes -- some still remain closed, but the clock is still ticking.

"In my district we suffered several power outages, fallen debris and flooding that prevented people from performing essential tasks or safely traveling throughout their communities," Soto said in his letter.

In the letter, Rep. Soto argues that extending the deadline past October 5 is fair and reasonable, not only for Florida's 9th district, but all those affected by these storms.
