Congressman Soto Statement on Administration’s Venezuela Sanctions

July 27, 2017

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Darren Soto released the following statement today after the administration's announcement of imposing new sanctions against Venezuelan government officials.

"As a co-introducer of the bipartisan Venezuelan Refugee Assistance Act –legislation that would provide immigration relief to Venezuelans that have long resided in the United States and fear political turmoil at home –I stand with the people of Venezuela.

"We are witnessing a blatant abuse of power by the Venezuelan government. While the people of Venezuela are suffering through a disastrous economic, political, and humanitarian crisis, a handful in power are living lavishly and enjoying immunity from all kinds of corruption. Justice is non-existent and the people are fed up. On July 16, 7 million Venezuelans sent a loud, unequivocal message to President Maduro when they voted against a new constitution, against continued human rights abuses, and against the deterioration of democracy in their country.

"The United States will not continue to stand by as the situation in Venezuela worsens. It is clear more forceful, immediate action is needed. I support the administration's decision to sanction Venezuelan government officials, and I call on neighboring governments to denounce President Maduro and support the Venezuelan people."
