House Passes Soto’s Kissimmee River Wild and Scenic River Act

July 19, 2022

H.R. 4404 adds the Kissimmee River to the list of potential additions to the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System and directs the Secretary of Interior to complete a study of the Kissimmee River within three years

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the House of Representatives passed Congressman Darren Soto's (D-FL-09) Kissimmee River Wild and Scenic River Act to add the Kissimmee River to the list of potential additions to the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System and direct the Secretary of Interior to complete a study of the Kissimmee River within three years. The bill was co-sponsored by Reps. Vern Buchanan (R-FL-16) and Scott Franklin (R-FL-15).

"It is critical for us to preserve the historic Kissimmee River as it is home to many of Florida's endangered species and the heart of the state's water drainage route," said Congressman Soto. "As we continue working to improve our environment, we must ensure that this natural treasure is able to sustain the growth of future generations. I am thrilled with the progress we've made in the House and urge the Senate to promptly send this bill to President Joe Biden's desk."

In 1968, Congress created the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System to "preserve certain rivers with outstanding natural, cultural, and recreational values in a free-flowing condition for the enjoyment of present and future generations." After efforts in the 1940s to control the Kissimmee River's flow led to issues that destroyed habitats, Congress directed the Army Corps of Engineers to restore the river back to its original path in the 1990s. The project was completed in July of 2021 and is contributing to the return of many wildlife species.
