Rep. Darren Soto Helps Secure Nearly $675k for Haines City Fire Rescue

July 19, 2017

Washington, D.C. - U.S. Representative Darren Soto (FL-09) announced today that Haines City Fire Rescue will receive a $674,978 grant to fund the hiring of additional firefighters and emergency medical technicians. During Soto's first week in Congress, he directed staff to contact the Haines City Fire Chief regarding this opportunity and advice on how to apply. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in cooperation with the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) award grants as part of their Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program.

"Firefighters are essential to the safety of our community. I'm proud to announce that Haines City Fire Rescue will receive nearly $675,000 from FEMA for additional staffing. These funds help make our residents safer and ensure that our fire department has the personnel it needs to get the job done," said Congressman Soto.

Funds under the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) program are intended to support the hiring of firefighters and the recruitment and retention of volunteer firefighters. SAFER strengthens the nation's ability to respond to fire and fire-related hazards, and improve the overall level of preparedness. SAFER gives fire departments the ability to attain and maintain 24-hour fire department staffing, assuring that communities have adequate protection.

Soto has made it a priority to increase grants awarded to agencies, municipalities, and non-profit organizations. His office has a staffer dedicated to identifying grants and working with members of our community navigate the federal grants process. Soto urges anyone in Congressional District 9 to contact his office for assistance with this matter.
