REAL STUDENTS, REAL SOLUTIONS: PELOSI/SOTO HIGHER EDUCATION ROUNDTABLE IN OSCEOLA
Valencia College, with four campuses in Central Florida, is filled with extraordinary students who are fulfilling their academic and professional goals in spite of the obstacles they face. Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi and Congressman Darren Soto met with these students to learn about their aspirations and struggles, and how Congress can help them.
In this clip, Representative Soto commends Valencia College for being a model for schools nationwide. The college helps non-traditional students obtain their four-year degrees through Direct Connect, a program that allows students to transfer to the University of Central Florida after successfully completing two years at Valencia.
Then, Jose Abastida, a Valencia College alumnus, spoke about the challenges he faces as a DACA recipient.
Congressman Soto replied by speaking about the legislation that House Democrats are working on to address some of the students' concerns.
When the roundtable wrapped-up, Leader Nancy Pelosi shared some final thoughts on the day and how thrilled she was to meet great Central Florida students.
As the Congressional session picks up, Democratic leadership is determined to keep their ears to the ground and advocate for real solutions that will help students and families with the problems they face every day.
