Rep. Soto Joins 100 Percent Clean Economy Legislation

November 21, 2019

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today Rep. Darren Soto (FL-09) joined Representative Donald McEachin and over 130 Members of Congress in introducing the 100% Clean Economy Act, a bill that will help put the country on a path to a 100% clean economy by 2050.

"Florida has been ground zero for climate change," said Rep. Soto. "From devastating hurricanes to rising sea levels, my constituents have been on the frontlines of the growing climate crisis. The 100% Clean Economy Act is an ambitious and achievable plan that will help us secure a clean energy future, while transforming our economy and creating new opportunities for all Americans. Let's lead our country in meeting the energy demands of today while developing the clean energy technology of tomorrow!"

This legislation directs federal agencies to use all existing authorities to put the United States on a path toward meeting the achievable 100 percent clean energy economy goal while remaining technology-neutral. Additionally, it directs the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to evaluate agency plans, make recommendations to strengthen them as needed and report each year on progress toward a 100 percent clean energy economy.

The 100% Clean Economy Act of 2019 lays out principles for federal agency action, including, but not limited to:

  • improving public health, especially for low-income and rural communities, communities of color, Tribal communities, and other vulnerable populations;
  • enhancing job creation and ensuring an equitable transition for workers in industries and communities affected by changes in the economy;
  • providing benefits for consumers, small businesses, and rural communities; and
  • preparing communities for the impacts and risks of climate change.
