Rep. Soto Statement on Federal Court Ruling on Florida’s Voting Rights for Felons

February 2, 2018

Washington, D.C.U.S. Rep. Darren Soto issued the following statement follow a Federal Court ruling deeming Florida's system of restoring voting rights for felons unconstitutional:

"I applaud the federal court for finding Florida's current restoration of rights system to be wholly discriminatory and arbitrary. Florida is one of only four states that has this terrible Jim Crow law holdover. We must also be wary of any quick and deceitful fix by the Florida Legislature to preserve the political status quo. Ultimately this ruling bolsters the fact that we need the Restoration of Rights Amendment to pass in November. It's time to close this dark chapter of Florida's voting rights history and restore the vote to over a million disenfranchised Floridians who have fulfilled their debt to society."
