Soto Statement on Pres. Trump's March 5 DACA Deadline, GOP Failure to Protect DREAMers

March 5, 2018

Washington, D.C. Today, U.S. Representative Darren Soto released the following statement on President Trump's self-imposed March 5th deadline to rescind the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program:

"President Trump tweets that his party stands ‘ready to make a deal' on DACA. Yet after six months since his decision to end the program, Trump and the GOP leadership in Congress have halted progress on nearly 14 bipartisan legislative proposals that would stop deportation of DREAMers. We are tired of empty promises.

"Today's arbitrary deadline puts over 800,000 lives at risk, including around 92,000 in Florida. This is an incredibly painful day for DREAMers, millions of their family, friends, and an overwhelming majority of Americans who stand with them. DREAMers are our neighbors, classmates, colleagues, and integral members of our communities in the Sunshine State. We must protect them!

"I urge Speaker Paul Ryan, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, and my Republican colleagues to bring forth legislation for a vote on the House Floor that grants DREAMers a permanent solution. Without action to protect DREAMers, America will ultimately suffer."
