Statement on News That Florida Still Considered for Offshore Oil Drilling

January 19, 2018

Washington, D.C.Congressman Darren Soto released the following statement following a Natural Resources Committee Hearing today, in which BOEM Acting Director Walter Cruickshank admitted that Florida is not officially exempt from the Trump administration's offshore oil drilling plan:

"It is very troubling to learn that after announcements by Secretary Zinke that Florida will be "off the table" from new offshore oil drilling plans, no official steps have been taken to formalize this exemption. It is shocking that Florida is still under consideration, according to BOEM Acting Director Cruickshank. Floridians have spoken loud and clear. We cannot allow another oil spill to destroy our state's way of life! I join my colleagues in opposition and urge the administration to reconsider prioritizing the oil and gas industries over the wellness of our coasts."
